4.0 is an unofficial mod that has stolen assets without permission. So if you want to play Third Age vanilla, pick 3.2. Third Age 3.2 is the "standard" LotR mod on which other mods build further, like Divide and Conquer (DaC) and Massive Overhaul Submod (MOS). Third Age 3.2 hasn't been updated since 2009.
A mod with a lot of potential, i give it an initial 8/10. Yes, it has many bugs and it has occasional crashes, but it still has a lot of potential and a lot of things done. It needs to be polished , a lot. A lot of work to do yet. I hope to see a major release within the next year to fix many of the problems it has. Worth the play.
Hey guys, I am listing here big mods still available and working for the Steam version of the game. I tested all of them myself to be sure. Be advised, mods overrun vanilla game files so if you want to uninstall a mod and play the vanilla game again, you'll have to delete the game from steam and delete the "Total war medieval 1 gold" folder in the steam folder manually, then reinstall the game.

Rome 2: divide et imperia - a massive overhaul. Changes just about every aspect of the game, makes it a ton more complicated, challenging, and more historical. Definitely a more hardcore way to play rome 2 IMO. Atilla: technically the biggest overhaul mod is ancient empires. Changes the game from the late Roman Empire to rome 2’s setting.
